About
The electric bass guitar, invented by the one and only Leo Fender, will be the guest of honour for this year’s Marni Jazz Festival. In 1951, Fender revolutionised the electric bass with his famous P-Bass, adding frets which allowed musicians to be much more precise in their playing (P for precision).
Who better than Michel Hatzigeorgiou, born in Charleroi in 1961 to Greek parents, to display its capabilities ? Hatzigeorgiou is a specialist on the electric bass, and the list of who he has played with reads like a who’s who of the greatest jazzmen of the past 35 years. Among others, he played alongside Toots Thielemans from 1983 to 2005, as well as the great Jaco Pastorius (who coincidentally removed the frets from his guitar to create a fretless bass) whom Hatzigeorgiou paid homage to with his unforgettable sets at Jazz Middelheim and the Gaume Jazz Festival in 1999. _ However, Michel Hatzigeorgiou is known most of all, along with Fabrizio Cassol and Stephane Galland, for having founded Aka Moon, one of the standard-bearers of European jazz (with this year seeing the release of their 20th album)....
